After spending 3 days in the woods of North Carolina, a shower was desperately needed, but we had no lodging arrangements in Richmond. A quick search on hotwire.com turned up a $100 4-star hotel in the lively downtown area of Richmond that we wanted to be in. We arrived in the Berkley Hotel shortly after lunch and settled into the welcome juxtaposition of curtains, a mattress, and a bathroom.
There were a few interesting spots in the neighborhood that we wanted to stop at, but first we did some much needed laundry. Our dirt covered camping clothes were thrown into the bathtub with some hotel shampoo for a wash and rinse.
After showering & cleaning clothes, our first stop out was at Bottoms Up, a pizza joint that while sounding like some sketchy sort of night club, is actually a rather tame, good place to eat. It was voted best pizza in Richmond and the 'Karens Klub' pizza with ricotta and sausage was evidence enough for us.
From the pizza place, we walked up to the capitol building to take a few candid shots. It was a Sunday, but still, things felt pretty quiet in the area.
While walking close to the river front, we happened across a plaque referencing several hurricanes that Jen found interesting because some were considered major storms down in LA.
Our last stop of the night would be Capitol Ale House, a brewpub with close to 50 beers on tap. We played darts, sampled beers, and took advantage of the $2 appetizer specials after 9pm.
We woke the next morning and enjoyed the fact that we could start a Monday with a jog, eat left over pizza for breakfast, and then take off for the nations capitol, DC.
